The daughter of a wealthy French jewelry merchant is kleptomaniac: she steals pearls. Suspecting the death of her Japanese mother might be the cause of her illness, she visits a remote island off Japan Sea where her mother was born and once lived as an “ama,” a pearl diver. The more she investigates her mother’s suspicious death, the more she is entrapped by the island’s unspoken past and its dark, ancient ritual.
